OpenSea • Web3 Arcade
2024

The brief of this event was originally just to create an web3 gaming-themed announcement on twitter. Once I discovered how the event planner was going to minimally brand the space, this was a perfect brand moment to not only make the attendees but the partners feel something specially tailored to their interests.

Artwork created for a limited edition NFT for people who received a 9dcc hat during the event.

Software used for this project was After Effects, Blender, Photoshop, Illustrator, & Figma .

The concept of the event was to incorporate a familiar nostalgia since the web3 gaming space is all about retro video games using blocked 8-bit type and graphics.

Day-of-event after set-up, announcement on X.

Preliminary render.

Use of a game cartridge harkens to the simpler times of gaming while allowing for the label to be a space to allow for disparate IPs to coexist.

One of many final renders of a game cartridge before moderate application of textural effects.

This is the more 'generic' version for OpenSea.

The treatment emulates a mixture of an old CRT visual degradation, soft blurs and a templated approach for cohesion across different non-owned channels.

The reasoning for the individual partner announcements was to pre-heat or generate interest & in-person participation around the event for the games' individual communities.

Game cartridges projection mapped via Resolume equipped event space. The original brief was to showcase random NFTs from each project on a 30-sec to 1-mintue loop, but after creating the personalized content for each partner… this was a great opportunity to make every person attending the event to feel excited about attending and supported by the OpenSea team and platform.

Each partners' cartridge was laid-out for the projection map, easing opacity for a gentle transition between each, as the space would be used for conversing rather than a highly kinetic style of animation.

Designed each logo for the main area of the space to live alongside the retro arcade cabinets that going to be placed in the event space. This was a proof sent to a vendor for pricing

After the quote came back, the opinion was to keep the signs for future OpenSea use and keep the budget in a manageable range.

Pre-install neon signs backstage, a concept for marketing for a branded vacuum-sealed mug, & menus for the VIP dinner before doors.

In-situ placement of fabricated 'neon' signs mounted above classic arcade cabinets.

In-situ placement of fabricated 'neon' signs on polished tabletops.

Attendees making use of the immersive installation.

Web3 gaming enjoyers.

GG.

Impact reflected through public testimony on X/Twitter.

OpenSea • SeaPort 1.6
2024

The brief was to revamp the existing logo for SeaPort, a web3 marketplace protocol for safely and efficiently buying and selling NFTs. As it was an incremental update, the goal of the announcement was to bring a little 'hype' to something that's normally relegated to a white-paper wiki.

ROLE: 3D & Motion Designer, Art Direction
Creative Direction: Jung Heo

Previous logo.

Extruded logo with minor bevel to show more facets, implying more features being added to SeaPort. A 1px grid was also created for an additional visual element symbolizing structure. New colors were used to align with OpenSea's brand colors of blues versus purples in the previous logo.

Alternate animation to play with the idea of more mystery.

Nike • Digital Marketing
2017—2021

I was an embedded contractor working for a few staffing agencies while working at Nike. I got exposure to production design, retail design, performance marketing, art direction, photo shoots, presentation design, identity, design consultation, directing external agencies' work, and even vetting vendors for creative technology pursuits.

I also stood in for design leadership for art direction and some days even the final approval for designs all over the Nike paid and unpaid eco-system.

ROLE: Digital Brand Designer

Internal logo for North America Digital Brand. Wanted to subvert the concept of digital with vintage technology drop-shadows with negative space; knowing that this was going to be overlaid on a multitude of presentations and backgrounds.

N7 running badge for use in the Nike Running application.

Review of earned and unearned states and mock-ups for authoring reference. Through the N7 Fund, Nike invests in nonprofits that serve Indigenous communities in North America.

Quick-win photoshoot for a Nike x Creed 2 (the movie) collaboration. Needed to create elevated assets since there wasn't any product photography available. Hardly any budget, but stuck to a gritty "boxing gym" look with color grade and a semi-organized laydown shot with boxing gloves and wrap tape on the concrete floor in the Nike NA Photo Studio.

Behind the scenes with photographer and stylist; floating hanger wrangling with fishing line.

For the HBCU stories presented by Air Shop, I helped with photography selection, retouching notes, compositions and copy editing with our writers. These stories celebrated each HBCU college graduates experiences and goals or aspirations with community and legacy.

Newer colorways of footwear don't always get a brand asset for their launch. Taking note of ACG's art direction, I composited the studio-photographed shoes and placed them within nature photography, emphasizing the footwear as points of interest.

Kybrid S2 'Sashiko' key art for the release of a new colorway for the popular basketball shoe. Art direction was to highlight the textural qualities of sashiko patterns with some subtle cell-shading for a light anime nod.

3D/Production — Ilovedust
Art Direction — Brent Bacheller, Jung Heo, Christopher Norman

Adapt BB 2.0 'Tie Dye'; art direction was to hammer on the tie dye bursts of pigment into water, since there would be nice contrast to how predominantly white and light blue the shoe is.

3D/Production — Ilovedust
Art Direction — Brent Bacheller, Christopher Norman

Applying a brand look from AKQA for a membership campaign within the limitations of the authoring platform for .com. Most times adding typography or even graphics was an impossibility due to responsive scaling cropping the image with little control . I always worked closely with the authoring team to discover modules we could use to get the best look and feel that still conveys the brand campaign's assets in the most elegant way.

Landing page for Nike x Stranger Things, a destination that subverts the normal white background for .com.

Having fun with authoring with burned-in type since the collection plays with a theme in the show, the upside-down or alternate reality.

Proposal for Nike Running to help elevate product detail photography on a new colorway for the Vaporfly running shoe using running graphics, the indigo color swatch and the product photography.

Performance marketing mock-ups using the graphics pattern as a background.

Header mock-up for mobile and desktop.

OpenSea • 'GG' Branding & Identity
2023—2024

The brief was to create a sub-brand for OpenSea that was focused on gaming in the web3 space as more games were emerging on the platform and the idea of live streaming became less of a nice to have and more of an opportunity to onboard people with new games and answer any questions they might have related to any functionality unique to being developed with crypto in-mind.

ROLE: 3D & Motion Designer, Art Direction
Creative Direction: Jung Heo

Early logo explorations; initially wanted to use more novelty game-like or comic typography as more of a departure from the brand's use of Poppins font.

Near-final logo, extruded in Blender using a roughened plastic material.

On light background, using the retro inspired neon-green brand color, and on dark background.

Social bar for the streamer to put at the bottom of the video frame in Streamlabs.

Frame for the streamer to put around the video input frame in Streamlabs.

Mostly templated announcements for brand identity, the final showing a variation, as marketing assets were usually scarce or an chance to elevate special guests like the founder of the game.

Playful abstract exploration using the gif stills in Figma.

Stream starting animation loop for use in Streamlabs. 'gg' created in Blender with overlays created in After Effects.

Behind the scenes with Blender and After Effects.

Stream ending animation loop for use in Streamlabs. 'gg' created in Blender with overlays created in After Effects.

A 'diamond' toast notification animation for new subscribers. Created in Blender.

'gg' gaming recap video I created with art from the project or scraping the internet for any form of marketing materials, showcasing each performing project with unique user stats.

Watch on X/Twitter here.

Oliver (head of business development and gaming) utilizing the stream elements, as well as the neon signs created for NFT NYC Web3 Arcade.

OpenSea • Skunkworks Awards
2023

The brief was to take an 8-bit skunk avatar and create a commemorative NFT for the company's internal awards. There were minimal rules, so I wanted to take it into the 3d/motion space.

ROLE: 3D & Motion Designer, Art Direction
Creative Direction: Jung Heo

Rebuilding the 2D skunk head in a voxel editor and then skinning and rendering the model in Blender.

Lock-up using different families of Druk.

Glitched scrolling banners for use on the multitudes of screens located within the OpenSea offices.

Early type explorations before and final comps for screens.

Stills from the glitch-frames on each unique award; using analog-like TV effects, data-moshing, slitscanning, and displacement filters.

The 'generic' NFT that anyone could mint based on attendance.

Live collection page with Burnies in the wild on the OpenSea platform.

Detail page view of the Skunkworks NFTs with banner art from the lobby typography.

Detail view of an individual NFT.

Eventhough this was only meant to be for digital redemption, the IT guy hired a vendor to create physical awards to dispense to attendees.

OpenSea • 'Burnie' Redeemable Token
2024

The brief was to create a visual that could be used for a non-fungible token for a new feature being developed for the OpenSea platform. The visual needed to be something that resembled something from early 16-bit video games, with a modern twist.

ROLE: 3D & Motion Designer, Art Direction
Creative Direction: Jung Heo

Early 3D explorations, using a voxel-style or just flames with simple sprite animations for the eyes.

Rather than the voxel-style, I went with a slightly more faceted look and feel with simple blinking to give the burning ember a little bit of life. Created in Blender with a toon style shading on the flames.

For the redeemable token, the team wanted to have an evolution between initial acquisition of the token and when it was burned, creating 'Burnie'. To the right is the final 'egg' with similar faceting on a black background.

Variations of hue for a rarity mechanic. Originally, the team only wanted the ember on it's own, but understanding how the speculative market is and to encourage participation with the community, I provided a couple colors that could be tuned to different rarities by the development team.

Destination page composition exploration for desktop viewport.

Mobile designs with variations on hero/header images.

Live collection page with Burnies in the wild on the OpenSea platform.

Detail page view of Burnie on OpenSea.

Live tweet/post.
